Green Tea + Black Pepper = A Whittled Waistline

Forget drastic diets: At your next meal, sip a cup of green tea and shake some black pepper over your entree. “A study recently found that the combo boosts the absorption of EGCG, a key antioxidant in tea tied to calorie burning, by a whopping 130 percent,” explains registered dietitian Cynthia Sass, author of the new book Cinch!: Conquer Cravings, Drop Pounds, and Lose Inches. Bonus: According to research published in Nutrition Journal, people who drank green tea with their meal reported feeling more full and were less likely to want a second helping than those who drank plain water. Experts say the compounds in green tea can affect the hormones that regulate hunger and fullness.

Stay-Well Strategy: Studies say as little as a half-teaspoon of black pepper can increase the absorption of tea’s beneficial compounds, so brew a cup of tea to sip, then take out your mill and get grinding!

Give in to the Giggles

There’s a reason they call it a “belly laugh”: Laughter is a bona fide stomach flattener!
“Laughing tones a group of stomach muscles called transverse abdominus. That’s crucial, because most forms of exercise can’t isolate these muscles, which are key to having a flat, toned belly,” says Chicago-based certified trainer, Stephanie Mansour. For a slimmer, sexier stomach, Mansour recommends a minimum of 10 minutes of hearty laughing a day.

Work-Out Trend: Hula Hooping

Step aside Zumba as Hula Hooping has become the new craze! That right, that thing you probably know and I’m sure you did lots of it when you were little.

Hula Hooping is fun! Swinging with a hoop around your waist and try to hold it there as long as possible is very good for a flat belly, better body position AND.. you burn lots of calories!

It’s a perfect workout solution and it’s very popular in the US where you can follow lessons or even join big hula hoop contests. Lots of celebrities like Michelle Obama, Live Tyler, Marisa Tomei and Beyonce Knowles work out with a hula hoop.

It looks easier than it is.. If it doesn’t work out it could be that your hoop is too light. Try a bigger and heavier hoop so it will circle slower around your waist and then it will be easier to hold it there!

So you see hula hooping is a fun and easy way to lose weight!

Get In Shape For 2010!

Often, just 20 minutes of cardio three times a week can help make sure your heart, lungs and vascular system are working efficiently and your muscles get the oxygen and blood they need. From aerobics to kickboxing, here are some options.

1. Running
Running is one of best activities you can do. It doesn't require special equipment (except some quality shoes) and you can do it anywhere. Best of all, you burn serious calories, especially if you add hills and sprints. A 145-lb person can burn 300 (at 5.2 mph) in 30 minutes. The downside is, it takes lots of practice and you should watch your knees and ankles for any discomfort or pain.

2. Cross-Country Skiing
Whether you're on a gym machine or swooshing over miles of snow, cross-country skiing is an incredible cardio exercise. What makes it so great is that it involves your upper and lower body, which means it doesn't take much to get your heart rate soaring. A 145-lb person burns about 330 calories during 30 minutes of skiing. The downside is: it's HARD. Take your time and ease into it.

3. Bicycling
Outdoors or indoors, cycling gives some great cardio. Using all the power in your legs, you'll increase endurance while burning lots of calories, anywhere from 250-500 in 30 minutes, depending on how fast you go and how high your resistance is.

4. Elliptical Trainer
The elliptical trainer is a great way to build endurance while protecting your aching joints from high impact activities. Plus, if you use one with arms, it's just like using a cross-country ski machine. The elliptical trainer is also a good choice for runners looking for a break from pounding the pavement. A 145-lb person burns about 300 calories in 30 minutes.

5. Swimming
Swimming, like cross-country skiing, is a full body exercise. The more body parts you involve in your workout, the more calories you'll burn. Spend 30 minutes doing the breastroke and you'll burn almost 400 calories. Best of all, your joints are fully supported so you don't have to worry about high-impact injuries. It's also great cross-training for other cardio activities.

6. Step Aerobics
Step aerobics has yet to lose its luster for many gym-goers and it's a good thing. Step is one tough workout that targets your legs, butt and hips while burning almost 400 calories in 30 minutes (during high intensity sessions). Though it might look complicated, step is easy to learn if you start with a beginner class or video.

7. Rowing
This is an often overlooked machine in the gym because most people are confused about how it works. Vigorous rowing can really get your heart rate up while working your arms like crazy. Plus, it's probably not something you do very often which means you'll burn even more calories. In 30 minutes, a 145-lb person can burn about 300 calories. That's if you do it with a little oomph.

8. Rock Climbing
Rock climbing burns a whopping 380 calories in 30 minutes, but this isn't an activity for the faint of heart. Though you use strength and power with your arms and legs, rock climbing has a high learning curve and requires lots of special equipment and techniques so you don't hurt yourself. Mental strength is a plus!

9. Walking
If you put a little oomph into it, walking is a great exercise, burning about 180 calories in 30 minutes. Adding hills, sprints or even a few minutes of jogging can increase the amount of calories you burn. Make sure you walk briskly--pretend you're trying to catch a bus--and keep you head up, back straight and swing your arms.

10. Handball
Okay, I'm not just putting this in here because my husband plays handball (and very well, I might add). Similar to racquetball (but without the racquet), the side-to-side sprints will get your heart rate up as well as strengthen your legs. The learning curve is high, so plan on practicing a lot before you can even hit that little ball. A 145-lb person burns over 400 calories in 30 minutes.

15 Healthy Foods to Have in Your Kitchen at All Times

You get it by now: Fruits and vegetables are good, potato chips and Oreos are bad. Not exactly rocket science. But are you stocking your fridge and pantry with the right healthy foods—as in, the ones that give you optimum nutrition for your buck (and shelf space)? Here are the foods to put on your grocery list—and keep there—for a healthy diet.

Yogurt

Keep your "good" digestive bacteria at a healthy level with yogurts containing live, active cultures. Warning: Some varieties are packed with sugar, so stick with plain or check the labels before tossing it in your grocery cart. Yogurt is one of several super diet foods thanks to the fact that it's both filling and loaded with calcium, potassium and vitamin B.

Wild Salmon

Unlike some other types of fish, studies have shown that mercury levels are relatively low in salmon. This is good news, considering the fish offers optimum nutrition and protein for few calories. It also contains omega-3's, which help maintain heart health. Why go wild? Farm-raised salmon can be more prone to disease and may have been exposed to or treated with antibiotics.

Egg Whites

Even with yolks, eggs have just 70 to 80 calories each—but that yellow center is high in cholesterol. Buy fresh eggs and then take out the yolks for a quick boost of protein in your breakfast. Mix them up with fresh vegetables to add flavor.

Leafy Greens

Healthy greens like broccoli, cabbage and kale have optimum nutrition and are loaded with a plant chemical that may help lower your risk of cancer. Low on vitamins? Add some spinach to your salad. Like other dark, leafy greens, it's loaded with iron and vitamin K, the ladder of which may prevent osteoporosis, diabetes and arthritis.

Blueberries

There’s no way to talk about super diet foods without mentioning blueberries, which contain antioxidants and double as an anti-inflammatory. Aim for about half a cup a day, whether on top of whole wheat, mixed in with yogurt or simply on their own.

Almonds

Not only do almonds help reduce bad cholesterol, they may help you lose weight—according to a study published in the International Journal of Obesity. Another study, this one out of Harvard's School of Public Health, found that the nut could reduce the risk of a heart attack by 25 percent if eaten at least twice a week.

Black Beans

Did someone say breakfast burrito? Add black beans to your list of healthy foods. They're high in fiber (a major plus) and offer other optimum nutrition components, such as calcium, iron and folic acid. So toss them in an omelet or make a black bean soup as the perfect cold-weather lunch.

Apples

You've heard the expression "An apple a day keeps the doctor away," and it's true. Apples are also packed with fiber and may help reduce your risk of heart disease, according to a study published in the Nutrition Journal. They also contain the mineral boron, which is good for bones.

Tomatoes

Tomatoes contain an antioxidant called lypotene, which may help prevent certain cancers. Studies have also shown that tomatoes can lower cholesterol, as well as reduce blood pressure and maintain healthy cellular growth (which is a fancy way of saying it can help you have healthier hair, nails and skin). Your best bet? Eat plenty of tomato sauce. You’ll be able to pack in more nutrients than by just downing slices alone.

Orange Juice

It’s also possible to drink super healthy diet foods. Orange juice contains heart healthy omega-3's, as well as potassium and—you guessed it—vitamin C. It may also help increase your HDL levels, a.k.a. healthy cholesterol. Look for fresh squeezed varieties and brands low in sugar.

Sweet Potatoes

Talk about optimum nutrition: Sweet potatoes have five times the "required" amount of beta carotene your body needs. So what does that mean? For one, healthier skin. Beta carotene can help prevent against sun damage. It may also boost your immune system, preventing you from getting sick from colds and other infections this winter.

Wheat Germ

Wheat germ contains magnesium, which helps keep your bones healthy in addition to reducing stress and maintaining healthy insulin levels. It also has iron, fiber, calcium, potassium and even zinc (which may help boost your immune system). Add wheat germ to your diet by sprinkling it on yogurt or healthy cereal.

Pomegranate
Eat this tangy fruit's juicy seeds or drink it in juice form for a punch of antioxidants, including tannins and anthocyanins. It's a must-have addition for any heart healthy diet since it may help blood flow and reduce levels of bad cholesterol. According to research out of UCLA, it may also help prevent certain types of cancers.

Hot Peppers

Chilies don't just spice up your favorite recipes—they’re also packed with vitamin C and may help reduce pain levels. They may also help you lose weight. Spicy foods have been found to increase the metabolic rate by up to 23 percent for short periods of time.

Oatmeal

Down a healthy dose of fiber for breakfast with a bowl of oatmeal, which may help reduce LDL or "bad" cholesterol levels, as well as provide nutrients, such as vitamin E, iron and magnesium. Tip: Add a scoop of protein powder for an extra healthy kick in the morning.

Don’t Shy Away

Just thought I'd share this beautiful poem with you guys :)

Drop by drop my Love for you fills this cup
Half way, not half empty or half full
Just half
Waiting for two to become one

Don’t shy away
I know you’ve been hurt before
But if you pour your Love into
Our cup
It will quench your thirst for Love

For this cup is filled with my Heart
And with Love like this
There is no time table
No hurry
And no delay

Don’t shy away
Drop by drop, let your Love flow
Let your Heart fill our cup until
It overflows with the Joy

And so finally what once was two Hearts
Is now one Soul
That has finally found itself again

Inspirational Stories of Famous Failures and Their Future Success

So you have tried something and you have failed. Maybe numerous times. You may have been told you have no talent, aren't cut out for "this business" or are never going to "make it in this line of work".

Well don't be discouraged. The following are stories of other people who were told the same thing or something similar and went on to be major successes! You might just recognize a few:

The Vice President of Columbia told this actor that he was never going to make it in the business. The actor? - Harrison Ford

His first book was rejected by 12 publishing houses and sixteen agents. - John Grisham

Turned down by a recording company saying "We don't like their sound and guitar music is on the way out" They were talking about the Beatles

Was told by his father that he would amount to nothing and be a disgrace to himself and his family - Charles Darwin

Told by a music teacher "as a composer he is hopeless" - Beethoven

Was told that "he couldn't sing at all" Enrico Caruso

Fired from a newspaper because he "lacked imagination and had no original ideas" - Walt Disney

Were told by Publishers that "anthologies didn't sell" and the book was "too positive"

Rejected a total of 140 times. The book? Chicken Soup for the Soul. It now has 65 different titles and has sold over 80 million copies all over the world.

Told by a teacher he was "too stupid to learn anything" Thomas Edison

Failed the sixth grade - Winston Churchill

Wasn't able to speak until he was almost 4 years old and his teachers said he would "never amount to much" - Albert Einstein

Did poorly in school and failed at running the family farm - Isaac Newton

Was not allowed to wait on customers in the store he worked in because "he didn't have enough sense" - F. W. Woolworth

Was cut from the high school basketball team, went home, locked himself in his room and cried - Michael Jordan

Producer told her she was "unattractive" and could not act - Marilyn Monroe

This book was rejected 18 times before it was published. It then sold over one million copies the first year. The book was Jonathan Livingston Seagull by Richard Bach

Auditioned for All My Children and got rejected - Julia Roberts

Received 30 rejections and the author threw it in the trash. Luckily his wife fished it out again and encouraged him to resubmit it. The book was Carrie - the author Stephen King

As you can see, these are just a few of the people who refused to listen to the criticism or the "experts".

If they could do it - so can you!

Steve Harvey: Act like a Lady, Think like a Man

Steve Harvey is giving women great advice on how to date smart. Since his appearance on the Oprah show you can see him everywhere.

In Act Like a Lady, Think Like a Man, Harvey reveals what men really think about love, relationships and commitment -- and how women can tell if they have a man with whom they can make plans, or a man who is just playing with them.

eHarmony: What are the biggest mistakes women make when dating?

Steve Harvey: One of the biggest mistakes women make is they expect their love to be returned the exact same way they give it out. That is one of the biggest mistakes because our love is a little bit different. It is still love, but it is not as encompassing as a woman's love. There are women who have great men, but they don't recognize it because they don't get a couple of things.

For example, a woman's love covers a number of things: It is communication skills, it is caring, and it is a nurturing skill. Women are great nurturers, great communicators. If a man gets sick, a woman nurtures him back to health just like it is in her DNA to nurture a child. She sits with you, she puts your head in her lap, she rocks with you, she checks on you constantly, she will even lay down with you and she stays with you until you are okay.

Guys' nurturing is different. We fill the prescription for you, we will heat up a can of soup, and then we go in and watch ESPN and, if you need us, call us. We love you, but how we demonstrate that love is what I call the three Ps of love: We profess, we provide and we protect.

That is how a man -- if he loves you -- this is how you can tell he loves you: He provides for you. Whatever his economic structure is, he provides for you and he will give you whatever he can. He will profess. If you have been dating a guy for six months, he has a title for you. If after six months, he is still calling you a friend, he has no plans for you. It doesn't take us six months to figure out if you are the one. We are just not that difficult. We are simple people.

The last P is protect. He will let nothing happen to you within his means. A man loves in threes, if he tells you he loves you, but he doesn't protect or provide for you, he is just telling you what you want to hear to get what he wants. He doesn't really love you.

eHarmony: When a couple is dating, what are the top red flags that can turn a man off to a woman?

Steve Harvey: Smokers throw a lot of guys off. I know guys who don't like dating women who smoke. Every guy I talk to doesn't really care for women who are not striving in their life to have something of their own. We love confidence, we love independence. [We don't like it] if a woman is too needy. There is a difference between needing and wanting. You can go into a relationship wanting it to work -- wanting a husband, wanting a family -- but you can't be too needy. Neediness throws us off.

Another red flag, a really simple thing for men is if you don't take care of your house or your person, especially your feet and your hands. Men don't talk about it [to women], but we talk about it among ourselves. Your feet and your hands are critical. I don't want to pull the sheets back and your foot looks like my foot.

eHarmony: I guess it goes without saying then that women need to keep their legs shaved?

Steve Harvey: Grooming is critical, just like it is critical for a woman. Women want a well-groomed man. Women think we don't look at stuff, but we are a very simple people, we like shiny things. We are attracted to the shine and the glitz.

eHarmony: What do you think are the keys to a successful relationship?

Steve Harvey: Trust and honesty is the cliché answer, but I can tell women that from a male standpoint, the key to a successful relationship is that the woman comes into the relationship with standards and requirements. That is the key to a guy: a woman who has standards and requirements and, in the book, I talk about this extensively. It is one my biggest chapters. Women have to establish their standards and requirements because the guy will only give you as much respect as you command. It is critical that a woman says up front what she wants out of a relationship -- and don't worry about running a guy off. A guy who is serious about you won't run off, but you do want to run off the guys who are just coming to play. A woman wants a guy who is planning with her; not playing with her.

Don't go on a date saying stuff like, "We will see how it goes." Don't do that. Women have got to stop saying, "We will see how it goes." If not, I tell you what is going to happen: It is going to go just like the guy wants it to go. If you don't have any standards and requirements, any parameters set up in your initial dating experience, then a guy just starts exacting his will and you end up not getting what you want. A woman should never be afraid to say what she wants, what she is looking for, and if a guy doesn't want to do [what she lays out], let him go about his business, because we are going to be doing one of two things with you: We are going to be playing with you, or we are going to be planning with you. There is no in the middle with us. We are dudes.

Living the Law of Atraction: Vision Board

Oprah recently talked about the Law of Atraction and more specifically about the vision board. Marthe Beck explained how a vision board is a great tool to visualize what you want to acheive in life plus it helps you stay focused

When creating your vision board, Martha says you shouldn't expect a straightforward process. "I get in a really calm place. I go to my core of peace, and I taste what is delicious in the future. It could be something I've never heard of, or it could be just the essence of something. I'm not sure what it is. And then I go through magazines or on the Internet, and I find pictures of things that represent that to me. It could be the actual object or it could be something that has the same feeling."

Louise Hay says it's also important to have proper gratitude for all you've received. This will keep those positive gifts coming. "The more grateful you are, the more you get to be grateful about. It's that simple," she says.

Reese Witherspoon's Yoga Workout

As the winded paparazzi know, Reese Witherspoon has long been a runner. But the 32-year-old has found a new way to increase her strength and stamina sans sneakers. She’s hooked on YogaHop, a class that combines poses with high-energy music. “Reese looked more toned after just one month of sessions,” says instructor and studio co-owner Matthew Reyes. The cameras may still follow her, but she’s never looked better in the pics.

REESE’S WORKOUT
When she’s in town, the actress takes two weekly 90-minute classes at YogaHop in Santa Monica, California. Unlike a typical studio, this one plays rock, pop, and hip-hop music, and the songs change daily. In the first hour, students move from one pose to the next every few breaths. During the last 30 minutes, the pace slows as the focus switches to flexibility and students hold stretches for up to a minute or more....

When I grow up

Whether you’re 15 or 35, everyday you (can) learn new things and grow. We often assume that by the time we reach 18 we will have all the answers and know everything we need to know. Big mistake!

To learn new things you have to be willing to learn and stay open minded. Take a leap and don’t be afraid to fall flat on your face. Which will happen, because not everything in life will work. You will have to be persistent at times in order to achieve your goals. If it doesn’t work this might be a sign that you should try something new and different.

Life isn’t about making the right decisions, it’s about dealing with the decisions you make and learning from them. There is a lesson in every experience and if you remain open to it you can learn so much and inspire others as well with your new found wisdom.

New Year's resolutions: Make it happen!

The year 2009 has just begun and I'm sure some of you have already a wishlist of what they wish to acheive in the new year. How do you make your resolutions become reality and not just a one week thing. Read these tips.

1. Set a very specific goal.
Do you want to lose 5 pounds or work out for 4 days a week? Resloving to "be more active" isn't specific enough. You need to define what you want in clear termes. For example: I'm going to work out 4 days a week for 30 minutes.

2. Set a goal that has a measurable outcome.
"Getting in shape" is not quantifiable. Without a goal that is measurable, how will you know when you've made progress or even reached it?

3. Assign a timeline.
"Someday" is just to vague. What makes a difference between a dream and a goal is that you have a timeframe for making it happen. A deadline can also help motivate you and prevent you from slacking.

4. Program your life with a strategy.
In order to acheive your goals you need to set a strategy. Don't let your emotions handle it, because willpower ain't gonna cut it. You need a plan and you need to change something in your lifestyle. Analyze what obstacles you need to deal with. Your environment, your schedule and your accountability must be programmed in such a way that all three support you. Life is full of temptations and opportunities to fail. Without programming, you will find it much harder to stay the course.

5. Identify small steps.
If you have a big goal you want to acheive, cut it into small steps. Not only will this motivate you everytime you acheive one of the smaller goals, it produces more result. Major life changes don't just happen; they happen one step at a time. Know what those steps are before you set out.

6. Set your environment up to help you succeed.
A key element for you to succeed is your environment. If you're trying to quit smoking for example you need to make changes in your environment so that it supports your new goal. Although temptations will come and go, you still can hev some control over it.

Boost your confidence

Everybody struggle with insecurities at times and that’s normal. Here are some tips that will lift your confidence:

1. Focus on what you like about yourself. What qualities are you proud of? What do your friends complement you on? Write them up for yourself and remind yourself of your qualities every time you feel like you need a boost
2. Learn new skills. You can never be over trained or over skilled for any challenge in your life. Knowing that your good at several things will make you feel good about yourself.
3. Surround yourself with positive people. The relationships you have in your life reflect the relationship you have with yourself and this relationship can never change if you are surrounded by negative people who put you down the whole time. Find people who support and motivate you.
4. Look for a role model (someone who has self confidence) and learn from them. What makes them confident, how do they act?
5. Focus on your achievements rather than your failures. If you can’t stop thinking about your failures look at what went wrong and learn from your mistakes. Life isn’t about making the right decisions it’s about dealing with them.
6. Act as if you were self confident and you will be more confident. If you decide to be more confident, people will start to treat you differently and give you the assurance you need. They may also need some time adapt to the “new confident” you
7. Prepare yourself thoroughly for any task so that you can be sure you are ready.
8. Set reachable goals for yourself and break difficult tasks into smaller steps. Every time you reach one of your goals this will boost your confidence and motivate you to achieve more.
9. Other people can be a source of inspiration and you can learn from their example but don’t compare yourself with others. Everybody is unique and has their own strengths and weaknesses. Everybody has different needs and dreams and so do you. Be yourself and find out what makes you happy and what makes you feel good about yourself.
10. Stand up straight and smile!

Believe in yourself! Have faith in your abilities! Without a humble but reasonable confidence in your own powers you cannot be successful or happy

Follow your gut

Sometimes you meet people who you instantly like while other times you might feel an instant aversion when meeting someone new. That is your gut trying to speak to you.

We don’t always have all the information to our disposal but your instincts follow you wherever you are and guide you. Unfortunately we often ignore it, especially is they are contrary to what others believe and think. We follow other people’s idea because we think we’re being irrational or emotional. But that’s a big mistake! When your instincts contradict the facts, try to gather all the information and your gut will tell you what to do.

Your instincts reflect who you are: your values, feelings, fears, experiences and goals. We develop our instincts from living, doing, watching and listening and they protect us and remind us of who we are.

Oprah Winfrey says there are three major reasons she is who she is today: intuition, her ability to feel what is right, and allowing that to be the strongest guide in her life.

Your intuition is a powerful ally and can help you avoid mistakes. The more you use and trust it, the stronger your intuition will get and that will make you feel confident about it.

Let passion drive your life

dWhat makes you happy? What fascinates you? What makes time fly?
When you love what you do, it motivates you to fully devote yourself to what you do. Passionate people don’t give up. They do what’s necessary to achieve success. Passion inspires you to come up with inventive ways to overcome any obstacles where others would stop.

When you have a great idea put it into action. Use your motivation and enthusiasm to convince others, otherwise your great idea will simply end up on the side of your desk. Passion is what makes the difference; a lack of it can often create the difference between failure and success.

Stay true to yourself. Often we try to please our family or others and pursue a(n) education or career we don’t like. Sooner or later good grades and money will not compensate the lack of passion that you feel.

Look at your interests and talents to see if you could develop them even more so that you can use it in your education/career. Talk to people who are successful in an area that you love.
What makes them successful? Do you have the required training? If you don’t, can you get the necessary training?

What if you simply don’t know what you are passionate about?
Try new things, find a new hobby,… Don’t be afraid to experiment! Sometimes you might discover your passion by coincidence and sometimes you just know. Talk to your friends and ask them what they consider to be your strengths. People are not used to praise each other so you might be surprised at what you hear.
